
Meta has begun another round of layoffs, affecting 3,000 employees across Africa, Europe, and Asia. The job cuts, starting today, February 10, 2024, will primarily target the company’s “lowest performers” and account for about 5% of its workforce. Unlike previous layoffs, Meta is not shutting down offices or making big public announcements—instead, affected employees will receive “performance termination” notices between February 11 and 18.
Interestingly, while cutting jobs, Meta is actively hiring for AI-related roles, particularly machine learning engineers. This aligns with the company’s focus on artificial intelligence as a top priority for 2025.
In Nigeria, Meta has been downsizing for some time. The company laid off 35 employees in 2023, including its entire Nigerian engineering team, and also scaled back its Lagos office space. While it’s unclear how many Nigerians will be affected in this latest round, Meta’s recent moves suggest Africa may be significantly impacted.
