Meta’s ‘performance terminations’ affected Nigerian employees

Meta has laid off 3,600 employees worldwide, with staff in Nigeria and other African offices impacted as part of its performance-based job cuts. Employees in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands were exempt, while affected workers in Africa, Asia, and other parts of Europe will receive termination notices between February 11 and 18, 2025.

A Meta spokesperson for sub-Saharan Africa described the layoffs as part of the company’s routine performance review cycle, without disclosing the number of affected African employees. Severance packages include:

• 16 weeks of base pay, plus two additional weeks per year of service

• Full payment for unused paid time off

• Six months of healthcare benefits

• Three months of career support and immigration assistance

The layoffs come as Meta prioritizes AI development, aligning with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s push for efficiency in 2024. The company plans to invest $60–$65 billion in AI infrastructure in 2025, reflecting a broader industry shift toward automation.

While Meta frames this as a performance-based adjustment, affected employees in Africa and beyond now face job uncertainty in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
