The event brought together young girls, women, industry experts, and policymakers to encourage female participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). It focused on mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and relationship building to promote gender equality in STEM fields.
Speaking at the event, Gloria Wawira, CEO of the National Youth Council, urged young women to embrace STEM boldly and use it to solve real-world challenges. She highlighted the importance of mentorship, leadership, and breaking gender stereotypes that hinder women’s advancement in STEM careers. Hon. Harriet Chiggai, the President’s Advisor on Women’s Rights, emphasized the need for strategic partnerships between the public and private sectors to drive inclusion and empower women in technology and innovation.
Huawei Technologies CFO, Maggie Gao Junhui, reaffirmed Huawei’s commitment to supporting women in STEM through initiatives like Seeds4theFuture, Women in Tech (WIT), DigiSchool, and the Huawei ICT Competition. These programs provide mentorship, digital education, and career opportunities for young women. Notably, 32% of this year’s Huawei ICT Competition participants were female, with five young women advancing to the Regional Finals in South Africa.
The event highlighted that Kenya’s digital transformation agenda offers equal opportunities for women and girls in STEM. Speakers encouraged young women to step forward, challenge societal norms, and contribute to technological advancements, ensuring a more inclusive and innovative future.
