Digital deception: How the Kenyan government uses misinformation to drive its agenda

Kenya is facing a growing issue of digital misinformation, as a coordinated social media campaign by the government portrays an image of economic success that contradicts on-the-ground realities. Despite claims of low inflation, job creation, and improved public services, Kenyans are struggling with high living costs, heavy taxes, and business closures.

The government is reportedly using social media influencers and coordinated digital networks to push exaggerated narratives, discredit critics, and manage public perception. These influencers are paid to amplify selective data and misleading achievements, masking economic hardships faced by millions. Investigations reveal that most of the pro-government posts originate from the same users, pointing to a well-organized narrative control system.

This strategy extends beyond promoting government programs—it is also used to silence critics, including independent media outlets. A 2023 Mozilla Foundation report confirmed the existence of a disinformation industry in Kenya, driven by paid influencers who use tactics like sock puppetry and astroturfing.

As economic difficulties intensify, skepticism towards this digital propaganda is growing, challenging the government’s narrative control.
