For the first time, Nigeria’s internet consumption exceeded 1 million terabytes in January 2025, highlighting the country’s increasing digital dependence. However, data usage dropped sharply to 27,475 terabytes, down from 94,502 terabytes in December 2024.
The decline may be linked to recent 50% data tariff hikes by telecom giants MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria, which could discourage heavy usage. Despite this, both companies saw strong internet subscriber growth, with MTN adding 1.4 million users (total: 73.7 million) and Airtel gaining 1.08 million users (total: 48.4 million).
Meanwhile, Globacom struggled, adding only 313,939 subscribers, and 9mobile saw no new growth following a regulatory audit in April 2024.
