Nigeria’s Internet Usage Surpasses One Million Terabytes Amid Digital Transformation

Nigeria’s internet consumption has hit a major milestone, surpassing one million terabytes in cumulative data usage as of January 2025, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission. However, monthly consumption dropped significantly from 94,502 terabytes in December 2024 to 27,475 terabytes in January 2025.

This shift comes as major telecom providers, MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria, increased data tariffs by 50%. Despite higher costs, both companies expanded their subscriber bases, with MTN adding 1.4 million users (totaling 73.7 million) and Airtel gaining 1.08 million (reaching 48.4 million). Meanwhile, Globacom added 313,939 new users, and 9mobile saw no growth.

The rise in cumulative data usage reflects Nigeria’s increasing digital adoption, though the recent monthly decline suggests changing consumer behavior due to price adjustments. As internet connectivity remains crucial, telecom providers must balance growth with affordability.
