Starlink Surpasses FiberOne to Become Nigeria’s Second-Largest Internet Provider

Starlink has become Nigeria’s second-largest Internet Service Provider (ISP), overtaking FiberOne, while Spectranet remains the market leader. According to the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) Q3 2024 report, Spectranet still holds the top spot with 105,441 subscribers, despite losing over 8,000 users. Meanwhile, Starlink, which launched in Nigeria in January 2023, grew rapidly to 65,564 subscribers in just nine months, pushing FiberOne to third place with 33,010 subscribers.

Out of Nigeria’s 241 licensed ISPs, only 124 had active users in Q3 2024, collectively serving 307,946 subscribers. However, this number is dwarfed by mobile network operators like MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile, which together have over 130 million internet users. Starlink’s success is driven by its satellite-based internet service, which provides coverage in remote areas where traditional ISPs struggle.

By the end of 2023, Starlink had already secured the third position with 23,897 users, marking a 113% growth from the previous quarter. Its expansion has been supported by partnerships with Nigerian companies like TD Africa and Konga. However, in 2023, the company temporarily paused new orders in cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt due to capacity constraints.
