Namibia’s telecom sector has recorded over N$800 million ($43 million) in data revenue for Q3 2024, highlighting a major shift towards data-driven services. Data now accounts for 70% of total mobile service revenue, a significant increase from 46% in 2018. This trend mirrors broader developments across Africa, where telecom companies are seeing rapid growth in data consumption, driven by increasing smartphone adoption, affordable data plans, and demand for digital services.
The Namibian Communications Commission reports that data has overtaken traditional voice services as the primary revenue source for telecom operators. This shift has led companies like Telecom Namibia to invest heavily in expanding 4G coverage and preparing for 5G deployment in urban areas. The government is also supporting digital growth through initiatives like the National Broadband Policy, which aims to improve internet access nationwide.
However, challenges remain, including rural connectivity gaps and rising cybersecurity concerns. To address these, telecom providers are exploring satellite internet and other solutions, while the government is working on data protection regulations. The booming digital economy presents opportunities for job creation and advancements in e-commerce, healthcare, and education.
