Starlink, the satellite internet service from SpaceX, has officially become Nigeria’s second-largest internet service provider (ISP), overtaking FiberOne Broadband Limited in Q4 2024. According to data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Starlink’s user base surged from 23,897 in 2023 to 65,564 by the end of 2024, reflecting its growing popularity despite its premium pricing.
Spectranet remains the market leader, though its subscriber base declined from 113,869 in 2023 to 105,441 in Q3 2024. Unlike traditional ISPs that rely on fiber and terrestrial networks with high infrastructure costs, Starlink’s satellite technology offers high-speed internet of up to 250 Mbps, making it a preferred choice for users frustrated by poor connectivity from mobile network operators.
However, Starlink has faced pricing controversies. In December 2024, it announced a price hike from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000 per month, which was later put on hold due to high demand and regulatory intervention. While the NCC approved the increase in February 2025, Starlink has yet to implement it, unlike other telecom operators such as MTN and Airtel.
Starlink’s expansion signals a major shift in Nigeria’s broadband industry, but regulatory challenges, pricing concerns, and its current restriction to fixed-location use remain hurdles to overcome.
