
Elon Musk’s Starlink has rapidly climbed to become Kenya’s seventh-largest ISP, overtaking local players like Dimension Data and Liquid Telecommunications. With 19,146 users and a 1.1% market share, Starlink’s satellite broadband is expanding internet access, especially in remote areas where traditional ISPs struggle.
However, regulatory challenges loom, as local competitors like Safaricom and Airtel Kenya push back, leading the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) to propose higher satellite license fees and turnover levies. Despite this, Starlink is cutting latency, lowering costs, and planning direct-to-mobile satellite connections by 2025.
While Starlink still lags behind market leaders Safaricom (36.1%) and Jamii Telecommunications (23.6%), its growth signals a shifting broadband landscape in Kenya.
