MTN South Africa and Lynk Global have achieved a groundbreaking milestone by successfully conducting Africa’s first satellite-to-mobile phone call. This historic trial, held in Vryburg, North West province, marks a significant step in expanding connectivity to remote and underserved areas.
The test assessed voice call quality and SMS capabilities over a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite connection, proving that existing mobile devices can connect without modifications. This innovation could help MTN achieve 99% broadband population coverage and improve real-time communication, emergency alerts, and connectivity in rural regions.
Lynk Global’s technology, which enables direct satellite-to-phone communication, promises to make connectivity more accessible across Africa. With lower latency and reduced satellite launch costs, this advancement paves the way for a more connected future.
