Why Lagos’ Coastline is Becoming a Data Center Hotspot

Global investors are rushing to Victoria Island and Lekki to tap into Lagos’ booming data center market, projected to reach 80 megawatts (MW) by 2027. Thanks to eight submarine internet cables landing along the coastline, Lagos is poised to become Africa’s second-largest data hub, after Johannesburg.

Proximity to these undersea cables ensures faster data transmission, better cloud performance, and greater network reliability. Major players like Equinix, Kasi, Nxtra by Airtel, and Open Access Data Centre (OADC) are investing in large-scale facilities, aiming to triple Nigeria’s data capacity to 200MW by 2027.

Beyond connectivity, reliable power, access to cooling water, and Lagos’ rapid urbanization are attracting even more investment. But as competition intensifies, navigating Africa’s fragmented data economy remains a challenge.
