Global data center giant Equinix is making a bold move to expand Nigeria’s internet infrastructure! The company which acquired MainOne for $320 million in 2022 has announced a fresh $140 million investment aimed at strengthening digital connectivity across southern Nigeria over the next two years.
This expansion includes a brand-new data center in Port Harcourt (PR1), which will also host Meta’s powerful 2Africa submarine cable, marking a major step toward breaking Lagos’ long-standing dominance in Nigeria’s digital landscape. Additionally, Equinix will scale up its LG3 data center in Lagos to meet rising enterprise and cloud demand.
Beyond boosting capacity, Equinix is also addressing network resilience by routing traffic over multiple cables to minimize disruptions and improve internet reliability across West Africa. With Nigeria’s broadband penetration still sitting at 45%, far from its 70% target by 2025.
Equinix’s investment, combined with government initiatives like the Broadband Alliance, could be key to closing the digital divide and unlocking new economic opportunities beyond Lagos.
