This includes setting standards for algorithmic fairness, data usage, and institutional oversight.

Ethical considerations must guide every stage AI development. As AI system are trained on large datasets, there’s a risk of reinforcing societal baises if the data lacks diversity or is used without scrutiny. Nigeria must establish ethical codes that priotize inclusiveness, avoid harm, and reflect the country’s values and cultural context. Encouraging local innovation that alligns with ethical principles will be key to ensuring AI serves the public good.

Privacy concerns also loom large in Nigeria’s AI journey . In a country where data protection laws are still evolving, the unchecked collection and use of personal data could lead to exploitation or survelliance. Strengthening data privacy regulations__ such as the implementation and enforcement of the Nigeria Data Protection Act__is vital. Citizen must have control over their data, with clarity on how it’s used, stored and shared.

To truly unlock the benefits of AI, Nigeria must invest not only on infrastructure and talent but also in shaping a digital future grounded in trust, equity, and accountability.
