Speaking at the commemoration of the 2024 World Science Day for Peace and Development in Abuja, the Minister said the world must embrace innovation to solve pressing global issues such as conflict, inequality, poverty, and climate change.

He explained that the theme of the celebration, “Building Trust in Science”, is particularly relevant in today’s world, where misinformation, fake news, and distrust in scientific data are widespread. According to him, building public trust in science will enable nations to leverage research and technology to create a more equitable and secure future.

Nnaji pointed out that the misuse of science and technology—such as in the development of weapons of mass destruction—has historically caused destruction and insecurity. However, he insisted that when rightly applied, scientific advancements can serve as bridges between nations and promote understanding, collaboration, and peace.

The Minister also highlighted the Nigerian government’s commitment to leveraging science and innovation to improve lives. He mentioned ongoing efforts to support research institutions, encourage innovation-driven entrepreneurship, and promote science education at all levels. Nnaji called for increased collaboration between the government, academia, private sector, and international partners to ensure that science serves humanity positively.

Representatives from UNESCO and other stakeholders at the event echoed the Minister’s message, reinforcing that science must be inclusive and people-centered to address global challenges. They also stressed the need for African countries to invest more in science education, infrastructure, and research capacity to ensure they are not left behind in the global technological race.

In closing, Nnaji urged Nigerian youths to pursue careers in science and technology, describing them as future change-makers. He said the ministry would continue to champion policies and initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s scientific ecosystem and contributing to global peace and prosperity.

To read click here

Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, has emphasized that science and technology are essential tools for achieving global peace and sustainable development.
