South Africa\u2019s National Research Foundation (NRF) and the UNESCO Category 1 International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost science, technology, and innovation (STI) in South Africa and across the African continent.<\/a> This strategic partnership aims to strengthen collaboration in research, capacity building, and knowledge sharing, particularly in biotechnology and related fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MoU underscores both parties’ commitment to promoting scientific excellence and inclusive innovation. It aligns with South Africa\u2019s national development priorities and the African Union\u2019s Agenda 2063, which emphasize sustainable development, education, and innovation. The partnership is also in harmony with UNESCO\u2019s goals to promote global scientific cooperation and capacity development, especially in developing regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key objectives of the agreement include expanding research and development (R&D) in critical scientific areas such as health, agriculture, and industrial biotechnology. By doing so, the NRF and ICGEB intend to address pressing societal challenges like food security, health crises, and climate change.
