It aligns with South Africa’s national development priorities and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which emphasize sustainable development, education, and innovation. The partnership is also in harmony with UNESCO’s goals to promote global scientific cooperation and capacity development, especially in developing regions.

Key objectives of the agreement include expanding research and development (R&D) in critical scientific areas such as health, agriculture, and industrial biotechnology. By doing so, the NRF and ICGEB intend to address pressing societal challenges like food security, health crises, and climate change. The agreement will also support young scientists and researchers through fellowships, joint training programs, and access to world-class laboratories and infrastructure.

Importantly, the MoU seeks to build a strong pipeline of African scientists by investing in human capital development. This includes promoting STEM education, fostering innovation ecosystems, and enhancing science-policy interfaces. The NRF and ICGEB will work together to facilitate cross-border collaborations, strengthen research institutions, and enable African researchers to participate in global scientific discourse.

The signing of the MoU is a major step toward reinforcing South Africa’s position as a regional hub for scientific research and innovation. It reflects the country’s continued efforts to lead in the promotion of inclusive and sustainable STI-driven development. Additionally, this collaboration enhances Africa’s ability to tackle global challenges using homegrown solutions grounded in cutting-edge science.

the MoU between South Africa’s NRF and the UNESCO ICGEB represents a forward-looking initiative to empower Africa through science and technology. It leverages international cooperation to build research capacity, nurture talent, and generate innovative solutions for societal advancement. This partnership is expected to yield long-term benefits by strengthening Africa’s scientific and technological base and fostering inclusive growth through knowledge and innovation.

South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF) and the UNESCO Category 1 International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost science, technology, and innovation (STI) in South Africa and across the African continent.
