The initiative, led by the governments of both countries in partnership with the private sector, marks a significant milestone in efforts to build a more interconnected regional digital infrastructure.

The new fibre link connects the border towns of Namanga in Kenya and Tanzania, enabling high-speed internet data exchange between the two nations. This infrastructure is expected to lower internet costs, increase bandwidth, and improve service reliability for both countries. It also supports regional trade, economic development, and digital transformation by fostering seamless communication and data transfer across borders.

The project aligns with broader regional goals under the East African Community (EAC) to promote cross-border ICT integration and digital economy development. It contributes to the One Network Area initiative, which seeks to eliminate roaming charges and reduce communication barriers within the region.

Government officials from both countries lauded the collaboration, noting that it will benefit not only Kenya and Tanzania but also landlocked neighboring countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo by enhancing their access to global internet infrastructure through Kenya’s coastal landing stations.

Kenya’s ICT Cabinet Secretary, Eliud Owalo, emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in building a resilient and inclusive digital economy, while Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Communication, and ICT, Nape Nnauye, highlighted the project’s role in driving innovation, business growth, and public service delivery.

The cross-border fibre link also enhances redundancy and network stability, ensuring uninterrupted internet services during outages or system failures. By strengthening digital ties, the project is poised to accelerate East Africa’s socio-economic growth, support digital innovation, and foster deeper regional integration in the years ahead.

Kenya and Tanzania have officially launched a cross-border fibre optic cable project aimed at enhancing digital connectivity and integration across East Africa.
