These rules, introduced in 2025, now classify services like airtime advances as a form of consumer credit, bringing telecom operators under formal lending oversight.

Xtratime allowed prepaid subscribers to borrow airtime or data instantly and repay the amount on their next recharge. It became a widely used service among low-balance users who relied on short-term credit to stay connected. However, under the new framework, providers of such services are now required to register, obtain approval, and meet stricter compliance standards before continuing operations.

MTN stated that the suspension is temporary and compliance-driven, adding that alternative channels for purchasing airtime and data remain available. The company also noted that Xtratime does not represent a significant share of its revenue, suggesting the financial impact of the pause is expected to be limited, at least in the short term.

The development highlights a broader regulatory shift in Nigeria’s digital economy, where services previously seen as value-added telecom features are now being reclassified as financial products. While the new rules are aimed at improving transparency, consumer protection, and debt oversight in the fast-growing digital credit market, they are already forcing major operators to rethink how embedded lending services fit into their business models.

MTN Nigeria has temporarily suspended its airtime and data advance service known as Xtratime, following new regulatory requirements under Nigeria’s expanded digital lending rules, in one of the clearest early disruptions from the country’s tightening consumer credit framework.
