Operated by CarePay, the platform has discontinued its \u201cMy Health Funds\u201d (MHF) wallet<\/a>, a feature that allowed users to set aside money exclusively for medical expenses. For years, M-TIBA\u2019s savings wallet played a critical role in Kenya\u2019s healthcare ecosystem. Launched as a way to \u201cringfence\u201d funds for medical use, it enabled individuals, employers, and donors to allocate money strictly for treatment, ensuring that savings could not be diverted to other needs. This model was especially valuable for low- and middle-income users who lacked access to formal health insurance but still wanted a structured way to prepare for medical expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shutdown process began earlier in March 2026, when users were notified via SMS and online channels that the wallet would be phased out. Customers were given until March 8 to withdraw their balances manually or receive automated refunds. Those who did not act within the deadline have since started receiving payouts directly into their mobile money accounts, particularly via M-PESA, without initiating requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision to shut down the wallet signals a broader strategic pivot. CarePay says it will now focus on strengthening health insurance management on the platform, shifting away from individual savings toward insurer-driven solutions. Despite the refunds, uncertainties remain. CarePay has not disclosed how many users are affected or the total value of funds returned. Additionally, accounts that could not be verified during the refund process may have their balances transferred to Kenya\u2019s Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority, requiring users to reclaim their money through a formal process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shutdown also comes months after scrutiny over a reported data breach in 2025, adding to concerns about trust and platform evolution. As M-TIBA transitions into an insurance-focused model, its ability to maintain user confidence while addressing gaps left by the discontinued wallet will be critical.
