African e-commerce giant Jiji has acquired Bangladesh-based classifieds platform Bikroy, marking its first major acquisition outside Africa and signaling the company\u2019s growing international ambitions. The deal represents a significant milestone for the Lagos-focused marketplace operator, which has spent the last few years consolidating its dominance across several African markets through aggressive expansion and strategic acquisitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The acquisition comes barely a year after Jiji announced plans to expand into Bangladesh, identifying the South Asian country as a high-growth digital commerce market<\/a> with strong similarities to Africa\u2019s emerging economies. Bangladesh, home to more than 130 million internet users and a rapidly growing middle class, has become one of Asia\u2019s most promising e-commerce destinations. Industry estimates project the country\u2019s e-commerce market could surpass $13 billion within the next few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 2012, Bikroy is one of Bangladesh\u2019s best-known online classifieds platforms, offering listings across categories such as vehicles, property, electronics, jobs, and household items. The company built a strong reputation for connecting buyers and sellers through localized services in both Bengali and English. For Jiji, the acquisition follows a familiar strategy. Since launching in 2014, the company has repeatedly expanded by entering competitive markets, scaling quickly, and eventually acquiring rivals. Previous deals include the acquisition of OLX Africa\u2019s operations in several countries, automotive platform Cars45, and Ghana-based classifieds company Tonaton. These moves helped Jiji establish a strong presence across Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Senegal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company\u2019s move into Bangladesh demonstrates growing confidence among African-born tech firms to compete globally, particularly in emerging markets facing similar infrastructure and consumer challenges. Analysts say Jiji\u2019s experience operating in price-sensitive economies could give it an advantage in Bangladesh, where consumers increasingly rely on mobile devices and digital marketplaces for everyday transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jiji\u2019s business model differs from traditional e-commerce companies because it does not hold inventory or manage logistics directly. Instead, it operates as a marketplace connecting buyers and sellers while monetizing premium listings and advertising services. This asset-light approach has helped the company remain profitable while expanding into multiple regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The acquisition of Bikroy could also pave the way for broader Asian expansion. Earlier this year, Jiji executives hinted at plans to enter additional Asian markets within the next two years.
