Ride-hailing company Bolt has increased ride fares in Kenya by 6% following mounting pressure from drivers grappling with rising fuel prices and growing operational costs. The fare adjustment, announced in Nairobi on Tuesday, reflects the increasing strain facing Kenya\u2019s transport and mobility sector as inflation and energy prices continue to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company said the increase was necessary to cushion drivers whose earnings have been eroded by high fuel prices, vehicle maintenance costs, and platform commissions. Kenya\u2019s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) recently raised fuel prices in Nairobi to KES 197.60 ($1.53) per litre for petrol and KES 196.63 ($1.52) for diesel, triggering concern among drivers who rely on ride-hailing platforms for income. According to Bolt\u2019s Senior General Manager for Rides in East Africa, Dimmy Kanyankole, the company is attempting to strike a balance between keeping rides affordable for passengers while ensuring drivers can earn sustainably. He noted that better driver earnings would improve ride availability, reduce waiting times, and maintain service quality for customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenya is one of Africa\u2019s largest ride-hailing markets, with thousands of drivers operating on platforms such as Bolt, Uber, and Little. However, the sector has become increasingly difficult for drivers as fuel prices, inflation, and financing costs continue to climb. In recent months, drivers have staged protests and threatened strikes, arguing that current fare structures no longer reflect the true cost of operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest fare increase signals a broader shift in the region\u2019s ride-hailing industry, where companies are gradually passing higher operating costs to consumers after years of aggressive price competition and discounted rides. Analysts say the move could influence rival platforms to review their pricing models as economic pressures intensify across East Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Kenyan consumers, the adjustment comes at a time when households are already struggling with rising food, electricity, and transport expenses. While the 6% increase may appear modest, it could significantly affect daily commuters who rely on ride-hailing services in major cities such as Nairobi and Mombasa.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
