Nigeria has taken a significant step toward strengthening its digital economy with the enactment of a new identity management law that expands the powers of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). <\/a>The legislation positions the commission as the country’s central digital trust authority, giving it greater responsibility for identity verification, authentication, and the protection of citizens’ digital identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new legal framework is designed to modernise Nigeria’s identity ecosystem by providing a stronger regulatory foundation for the National Identification Number (NIN) and related digital identity services. It also aims to improve coordination among government agencies, financial institutions, telecommunications companies, and private-sector organisations that rely on identity verification for service delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, Nigeria has pursued a unified digital identity system to improve governance, financial inclusion, and access to public services. Millions of Nigerians have enrolled for the NIN, which is now required for activities ranging from opening bank accounts and obtaining passports to registering SIM cards and accessing government programmes. The updated law seeks to build on this progress by establishing NIMC as the trusted institution responsible for managing and securing the country’s digital identity infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the law’s key objectives is to create greater confidence in digital transactions. As more government and commercial services move online, reliable identity verification has become essential for preventing fraud, reducing identity theft, and enabling secure electronic interactions. The expanded role of NIMC is also expected to support Nigeria’s growing digital economy. Beyond the private sector, the legislation could improve the delivery of public services. Government agencies may be able to verify citizens more quickly when distributing social benefits, collecting taxes, issuing licences, or managing electoral and healthcare records. However, the expanded authority granted to NIMC also places greater responsibility on the commission to safeguard personal data. Cybersecurity experts have emphasised the need for strong data protection measures, transparent governance, and strict oversight to prevent misuse of sensitive identity information. Maintaining public trust will depend on the commission’s ability to secure its systems against cyber threats while complying with Nigeria’s data protection regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry observers believe the law marks an important milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda. As digital payments, online commerce, e-government services, and artificial intelligence continue to expand, trusted digital identities will become increasingly critical infrastructure.
