Cape Town\u2019s fintech ecosystem continues to attract major investment as payments startup Moment secures $22 million in new funding,<\/a> highlighting growing confidence in Africa\u2019s digital payments infrastructure. The deal also brings Canal+ into the company\u2019s shareholder base, creating a significant strategic connection between financial technology and one of Africa\u2019s largest media ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moment was established as a pan-African payments business with ambitions to make it easier for companies to collect, send and manage money across multiple African markets. Its platform is designed to address one of the continent\u2019s biggest financial challenges: fragmented payment systems that vary significantly from country to country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company\u2019s growth has been closely connected to MultiChoice, which helped establish Moment alongside payments infrastructure company Rapyd and venture investor General Catalyst. Moment initially became an important part of MultiChoice\u2019s digital strategy, processing payments for services such as DStv and supporting the relaunch of Showmax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The $22 million financing is particularly notable because it demonstrates the commercial potential of building payment infrastructure around large consumer platforms. Moment had already processed substantial payment volumes through MultiChoice\u2019s ecosystem, while expanding its capabilities beyond a single corporate customer. MultiChoice reported that Moment\u2019s payment volumes surpassed $240 million in the first half of 2024 and that its platform was live across more than 40 African countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The French media group completed its acquisition of MultiChoice in 2025, creating a larger entertainment business with a significant African footprint. For Moment, the investment could provide additional resources to expand its technology, strengthen its presence across African markets and build products for businesses beyond the traditional media sector. Its long-term opportunity lies in serving companies that need reliable ways to collect payments from customers across borders and payment methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Africa\u2019s payment landscape remains highly fragmented, with consumers using bank accounts, mobile wallets, cards, cash and increasingly real-time payment systems.
