The Masakhane African Languages Hub has awarded 26 projects under the LINGUA Africa initiative<\/a>, marking a major step toward making artificial intelligence more inclusive and representative of Africa\u2019s linguistic diversity. The programme is supported by the Microsoft AI for Good Lab, the Gates Foundation, Masakhane African Languages Hub and Google.org.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The selected projects cover more than 50 African languages, dialects and sign languages spoken by more than 500 million people across 47 countries. They include widely spoken languages such as Hausa, Yoruba, Kiswahili, Amharic, Wolof and Luganda, as well as languages and dialects that have historically received limited attention from digital technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LINGUA Africa was created to address a major problem in modern artificial intelligence: the lack of quality data, models and digital tools for many African languages. When languages are poorly represented in AI systems, speakers can face difficulties accessing technologies for education, healthcare, financial services, public information and other essential areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 26 winning projects fall across three broad areas: data creation, model and tool development, and sectoral applications. Together, they will create language datasets, develop speech and language technologies, and deploy AI solutions designed around real-world community needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The projects also demonstrate how African-language AI can move beyond research laboratories and into practical applications. Selected initiatives will work on areas including healthcare, agriculture, education, justice, journalism, public services and digital inclusion. For example, the World Health Organization\u2019s AFYA-LINGUA project will develop an African-language layer for health, while other projects will focus on agricultural advice, maternal healthcare and access to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme follows an open call that attracted more than 800 applications from 64 countries, with 85% coming from Africa. The strong response highlights the growing interest among African researchers, technology organisations, universities and community groups in building AI around local languages and needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funding is only one part of the support available. Depending on their category, selected projects can receive cash funding alongside cloud-computing resources, technical assistance and collaboration opportunities. Sector-focused projects were eligible for up to $250,000 in cash and $400,000 in compute credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Masakhane, the initiative represents a broader effort to ensure African languages are not treated as an afterthought in the development of AI. By supporting open resources and locally grounded projects, LINGUA Africa could help strengthen the continent\u2019s AI ecosystem while preserving linguistic and cultural diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
