The company has been linked to plans for a US listing that could value it at around $4 billion, with major investment banks reportedly involved in preparations.

The reported profitability comes as OPay continues to expand its role in Nigeria’s digital payments ecosystem. The fintech serves more than 45 million consumer users and over one million merchants and businesses, giving it one of the largest user networks among Nigerian fintech companies.

OPay’s growth has been driven by demand for digital payments, transfers, bill payments, airtime purchases and merchant services. Its extensive agent and merchant network has also helped bring digital financial services to consumers and small businesses across the country.

The company has continued investing heavily in technology as transaction volumes increase. In July, OPay said its technology infrastructure had helped push transaction success rates to 99.9%, while processing times had fallen to less than one second. The company has also outlined an ambitious long-term goal of reaching one billion users globally and supporting 10 million merchants.

Profitability is particularly important if OPay proceeds with an IPO. Public-market investors typically look beyond user growth and transaction volumes, placing significant emphasis on revenue quality, operating efficiency and the ability to generate sustainable profits. A profitable business could therefore strengthen OPay’s case as it seeks a public-market valuation.

Reports indicate that OPay is working with Citigroup, Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan on preparations for a potential US IPO. The company is reportedly targeting a valuation of approximately $4 billion, although no formal IPO filing or confirmed listing date has been publicly announced.

OPay’s potential listing also highlights the growing global interest in African fintech companies. Nigerian startups such as Flutterwave, Moniepoint and Interswitch have demonstrated the scale of opportunity in the country’s financial technology sector, as millions of consumers and businesses move toward digital financial services.

However, an IPO would bring greater scrutiny. OPay would need to demonstrate that its profitability can be maintained while navigating competition, regulatory changes, currency pressures and the costs associated with expanding its infrastructure.

For OPay, the combination of profitability, a large customer base and continued technology investment could provide a strong foundation for the next stage of its growth. If the company successfully reaches the public markets, its IPO could become one of the most significant tests yet of global investor appetite for African fintech.

OPay is entering a potentially important new phase as the Nigerian fintech strengthens its financial position ahead of a possible initial public offering.
