The round was led by Quona Capital, with participation from University Technology Fund, E4E, Next176/FutureGrowth and angel investors including former Old Mutual CEO Iain Williamson.

Jem, formerly known as SmartWage, began in 2020 with a relatively simple proposition: allow employees to access part of the wages they had already earned through WhatsApp. The company has since expanded far beyond earned wage access, adding services including payslips, employee onboarding, time and attendance, leave management and workforce communication.

Today, the company says its platform serves more than 250,000 frontline employees across more than 200 organisations. Its customer base includes businesses such as Servest, KFC, Meridian, The Capital, Edgars and Illovo. Jem has also reported more than 100% year-on-year growth in recurring revenue and approximately 120% net revenue retention, indicating strong engagement among its employer customers.

The decision to build around WhatsApp is central to Jem’s strategy. Traditional HR software is often designed for employees who sit behind computers and have easy access to corporate systems. That model does not work as well for security guards, retail workers, hospitality staff, cleaners, factory employees and other people who spend most of their working day away from desks.

By using WhatsApp as the primary employee interface, Jem reduces the need for workers to download and learn another application. Employees can access workplace services through a platform they already understand, while employers gain a single channel for communicating with and managing large frontline teams.

The new funding will help Jem accelerate this broader workforce-management strategy. The company has launched Jem 2.0, with products covering areas such as time and attendance, credit scores and employee assistance programmes. Other services, including rostering and learning management, are being tested in beta.

Artificial intelligence is also becoming an important part of the company’s next stage. Jem describes its evolving platform as AI-native and says employers can connect to its systems through secure integrations, allowing them to carry out workforce tasks from existing AI tools.

For investors, the opportunity extends beyond HR software. Quona Capital argues that Jem’s combination of workforce management, employer distribution and embedded financial services could give it a powerful position among workers who are often underserved by traditional financial institutions.

Jem’s latest raise therefore represents more than another funding milestone. It signals a broader ambition to turn WhatsApp into an operating layer connecting African employers with their frontline workers. If the company can successfully combine HR technology, financial services and AI on a familiar platform, it could reshape how millions of deskless workers access workplace services.

South African workforce technology startup Jem is entering a new phase after raising $8.4 million in Series A funding to expand its WhatsApp-based platform for frontline and deskless workers.
