Africa\u2019s artificial intelligence race is entering a new phase. The competition is no longer only about who can build the best AI models or attract the biggest investments. Increasingly, it is about who controls the data, computing infrastructure and digital systems powering those technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the continent, governments are pushing for greater data sovereignty, seeking to ensure that sensitive information generated by citizens, businesses and public institutions is stored, processed and governed under African laws. The shift is creating both a challenge and an opportunity for global cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS).<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Africa\u2019s data-centre footprint remains small compared with its population and digital ambitions. The continent has less than 1% of global data-centre capacity, according to the World Economic Forum, even though Africans account for about 18% of the world\u2019s population. This infrastructure gap has made many African countries dependent on foreign providers for computing power, cloud services and AI development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That dependence is increasingly uncomfortable for policymakers. Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and South Africa have all been developing policies aimed at strengthening local control over AI, data and digital infrastructure. The objective is not necessarily to shut out international technology companies, but to negotiate a stronger position within the global AI ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AWS appears to be positioning itself for this new environment. The company has increasingly promoted its digital and AI sovereignty capabilities, arguing that customers should have greater control over where their data is stored, how workloads are secured and where AI systems operate. AWS says its sovereignty approach is designed to provide control and choice without sacrificing cloud performance and scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Africa already provides examples of how this strategy can work. In Kenya, AWS infrastructure has been used to support the national electronic medical records system through an AWS Outpost deployment. The system serves more than 2,300 health facilities and millions of patient interactions, while keeping critical workloads within a locally controlled infrastructure environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For AWS, such deployments could become increasingly important as governments classify healthcare, financial and public-sector information as sensitive data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But sovereignty is about more than putting servers inside national borders. African policymakers also want local skills, African datasets, stronger cybersecurity, affordable computing and greater participation in the value created from AI. Local infrastructure without local ownership and expertise could simply reproduce the continent\u2019s existing dependence on foreign technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next phase of Africa\u2019s AI race will therefore be shaped by partnerships. Cloud providers can bring capital, computing power and technical expertise, while African governments and businesses can provide markets, talent, data and local knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For AWS, the opportunity is significant. But winning Africa\u2019s AI market may ultimately require more than selling cloud services. It will require convincing governments and businesses that global-scale infrastructure can coexist with genuine African control over the continent\u2019s digital future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
