While African startups raised about $1.44 billion during the first half of 2026, access to venture capital remains more selective than during the funding boom of previous years. This has made acquisitions an increasingly attractive option for companies looking to scale or secure strategic assets.

Financial services is at the centre of the consolidation wave. The sector accounted for 27 of the 84 deals recorded, representing roughly one-third of all M&A activity. The trend reflects the importance of banking licences, payment infrastructure, agent networks and large customer bases in Africa’s rapidly evolving financial ecosystem.

Geographically, Southern Africa recorded 24 deals while Northern Africa followed with 18. South Africa led individual countries with 22 target companies, followed by Nigeria and Egypt with 12 deals each. African companies are also expanding beyond the continent, acquiring eight companies in markets including the UK, United States, France, Germany and Canada.

However, the $11.4 billion figure needs some context. Most of the 84 transactions did not disclose their financial terms. A handful of large deals account for the majority of the disclosed value.

Among the biggest transactions is MTN Group’s proposed $6.2 billion acquisition of a 75% stake in IHS Towers. Vodacom’s $2.1 billion stake transaction involving Safaricom and Pepkor Holdings’ $1.29 billion merger involving Flash and Shop2Shop also contributed substantially to the total. Other notable transactions include Nedbank’s $850 million acquisition of Kenya’s NCBA Group.

Another important development is the growing relationship between fintechs and traditional banks. Some fintech companies are moving into banking by acquiring financial institutions or obtaining banking licences, while established banks are purchasing fintechs to gain technology, customers and digital capabilities.

This creates two competing strategies. Fintech founders may use acquisitions to gain regulated infrastructure while maintaining control of their businesses. Traditional banks, meanwhile, can use acquisitions to bring emerging technology and digital products into established financial institutions.

The broader M&A surge suggests that Africa’s technology market is entering a more mature phase. Instead of relying exclusively on venture funding to expand, companies are increasingly using acquisitions, strategic combinations and international expansion to build scale.

If the trend continues through the remainder of 2026, M&A could become one of the defining features of Africa’s technology economy—not simply as an exit strategy, but as a powerful tool for consolidation, market expansion and long-term competitiveness.

Africa’s technology and digital economy is experiencing a major wave of consolidation, with mergers and acquisitions (M&A) becoming an increasingly important route for companies seeking growth, new licences, customers and stronger market positions.
