From fresh vegetables and fruits to meat, seafood, grains and household essentials, these markets offer variety, competitive prices and relationships built between traders and customers. But the traditional shopping experience can also mean traffic, long trips, crowded spaces and hours spent moving from stall to stall.

Soillight is trying to change that experience without removing the market itself.

The Nigerian startup is building a digital marketplace that connects shoppers directly with local market sellers, allowing customers to discover and order groceries online and have them delivered to their doorstep. Rather than creating another online supermarket with its own inventory, Soillight is digitising the existing market ecosystem.

That distinction is important. Local markets already have thousands of sellers and an enormous range of products, but much of that commerce remains offline. A trader may have loyal customers and competitive prices but still depend heavily on people physically visiting a stall.

Soillight gives those sellers another channel.

By bringing traders onto a digital platform, the company allows them to showcase their products to customers beyond their immediate physical location. Sellers can potentially increase visibility and generate orders without opening another shop or investing heavily in their own e-commerce infrastructure.

For consumers, the proposition is convenience. Instead of travelling to a market, negotiating through crowded stalls and carrying groceries home, shoppers can browse products, place an order and wait for delivery. The platform focuses on connecting customers with verified local sellers, while maintaining the variety associated with physical markets.

This approach also reflects a broader change in Nigerian consumer behaviour. As smartphones, digital payments and e-commerce become increasingly embedded in everyday life, consumers are becoming more comfortable buying products online. Grocery shopping, however, presents a harder challenge because customers care about freshness, quality and price.

Soillight’s model attempts to address that by keeping local traders at the centre of the transaction rather than replacing them with a conventional supermarket model.

The timing is also significant. Nigeria’s online grocery sector has faced difficult economics, with high logistics costs, thin margins, inflation and price-sensitive consumers making sustainable delivery businesses challenging. Soillight therefore has to prove that digital convenience can work alongside the realities of Nigeria’s informal food markets.

Its larger opportunity may be helping local commerce become digitally visible. If successful, the platform could give small traders access to customers they might never reach through foot traffic alone while giving consumers a more convenient way to shop.

The idea is not to replace Nigeria’s markets. It is to extend them.

As Soillight puts it, the future of food retail can be both local and digital. Its challenge now is turning that vision into a sustainable marketplace where sellers earn more, customers save time and traditional commerce gains a digital front door.

For generations, Nigeria’s local markets have been central to how households buy food.
