The company has appointed Ben MacWilliams, a former SpaceX executive who helped take Starlink into more than 20 African countries, as its Vice President of Strategy.

The appointment comes at an important moment for Terra. The Abuja-based company recently closed its seed round at $52 million and is positioning itself as a defence technology company capable of building autonomous security systems for governments and critical infrastructure across the Global South.

MacWilliams brings experience that could be particularly valuable for Terra’s next phase. At SpaceX, he led Starlink’s market-access efforts across Africa, working with governments, regulators and other stakeholders to secure the approvals needed to launch the satellite internet service in more than 20 countries. He had also worked on market access across the Middle East and Central Eurasia.

His new role at Terra will focus on market entry, licensing strategy and government partnerships as the company takes its autonomous defence systems into new international markets. That means navigating regulatory requirements and building relationships with governments—challenges that are particularly important in the defence industry, where technology deployment often depends on government approval and procurement decisions.

Terra develops autonomous systems spanning air, land and surveillance applications. Its product portfolio includes unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned ground systems and autonomous sentry towers. The company says its systems are designed to protect critical infrastructure such as energy facilities, mines, borders and other strategic assets.

The company’s expansion plans have also accelerated following its $52 million seed round. Terra says the funding will support international expansion, manufacturing capacity and the growth of its engineering, operations and business-development teams. It has opened its first international office in London as part of that push.

Terra is also expanding its manufacturing footprint. Its Abuja facility is being complemented by plans for a larger drone manufacturing facility in Ghana, giving the company additional capacity to produce autonomous and counter-drone systems for regional and international markets.

MacWilliams’ move is therefore more than a high-profile executive appointment. It reflects the increasing ambition of African defence startups to build technology for global markets rather than remain focused solely on domestic demand.

For Terra, the challenge will be converting its technical capabilities and growing capital base into large-scale government deployments. Defence markets are highly regulated, relationship-driven and expensive to enter.

That is where MacWilliams’ experience could prove crucial.

His transition from expanding Starlink’s footprint across Africa to helping an African defence company expand globally also highlights a broader trend: African technology companies are increasingly developing products designed not only for local problems, but for markets across the Global South.

If Terra succeeds, its next chapter could demonstrate that sophisticated defence technology can be designed, manufactured and exported from Africa to the rest of the world.

Nigerian defence-technology startup Terra Industries is adding experience from one of the world’s most ambitious technology companies as it prepares to expand beyond Africa.
