In reality, the firm says, African businesses often need more time for markets, infrastructure, regulation and organisations to mature.

One of the clearest lessons is that capital cannot eliminate time. Funding can help companies hire talent, build infrastructure and expand distribution, but it cannot instantly create market readiness or sustainable unit economics. Scaling too early can instead make unresolved problems larger, increasing bureaucracy and burning capital before the underlying business model is ready.

TLCOM has also learned that technology adoption alone does not create venture-scale businesses. A startup may have millions of users and rapidly growing transaction volumes without developing strong economics. For venture returns to emerge, technology must fundamentally improve the cost of serving customers, strengthen distribution, improve risk management or create other structural advantages. Growth matters, but the quality of that growth matters more.

The firm believes Africa’s ecosystem is now better positioned for this kind of scaling. Companies such as Paystack, Flutterwave, Jumia and Andela have created an experienced pool of operators who understand how to build and manage technology businesses across difficult markets. New founders can therefore benefit from lessons that previously took years to acquire.

Infrastructure has also become easier to assemble. Instead of building every payment rail, logistics network or technology layer from scratch, startups can increasingly combine existing APIs and third-party infrastructure. This reduces the amount of capital and time required to launch and scale new products.

Regulation and access to capital have improved as well. Open banking initiatives, instant-payment systems and regulatory sandboxes are creating clearer pathways in financial services, while the ecosystem now has a broader base of local and international investors.

Perhaps the most important lesson is that African challenges can become global advantages. Companies that solve difficult problems in fragmented markets can develop capabilities that are valuable beyond the continent.

For TLCOM, the next decade is therefore about backing businesses capable of compounding rather than simply expanding quickly. The firm’s experience suggests that Africa’s venture opportunity will not be built through speed alone. It will come from patient capital, stronger companies, better infrastructure and founders who turn local complexity into durable competitive advantages.

Africa’s startup ecosystem may have taken longer to mature than many investors expected. But TLCOM believes that the foundations built over the past decade are now beginning to reinforce one another—and that could define the continent’s next generation of venture-scale companies.

After more than a decade of investing in African technology companies and deploying over $100 million, venture capital firm TLCOM says its biggest lessons have less to do with the amount of capital invested and more to do with the time required to build durable businesses.
