Allawee built tools that allow fintechs and businesses to issue, manage and process cards without having to build the underlying infrastructure themselves. Paystack, meanwhile, has grown from a payments processor into a broader financial technology company serving businesses across Africa.

Allawee’s platform was designed to simplify one of the most complicated parts of launching a fintech product: card issuance. Its infrastructure connects businesses with banks, card networks, processors, manufacturers and other partners through APIs and a no-code platform. The company says its technology can allow businesses to configure and issue cards within weeks rather than the months or years traditionally associated with launching card programmes.

That infrastructure could complement Paystack’s expanding ambitions. Paystack already provides payment acceptance tools across cards, bank transfers, USSD, mobile money and other channels, and its fintech offering allows companies to build products spanning areas such as lending, savings and insurance.

For Allawee, becoming part of a larger platform could provide access to significantly greater infrastructure, distribution and resources. The startup had positioned itself as a specialist infrastructure provider at a time when Nigerian fintechs were struggling with the economics and reliability of card payments. Its customers have included companies looking to bring cards back to their users while reducing transaction costs and operational complexity.

The reported acquisition also reflects a broader shift in Nigeria’s fintech ecosystem. After years when startups could raise large amounts of venture capital to build standalone products, companies are increasingly looking for ways to combine infrastructure, licences, technology and customer bases.

Paystack itself has been moving in this direction. In 2026, the company reorganised under The Stack Group, bringing its payments business together with Paystack Microfinance Bank, consumer-focused products and other ventures. The restructuring signalled an ambition to build a broader financial-services platform rather than remain focused solely on payment processing.

The acquisition of Allawee would fit naturally into that strategy. Card infrastructure can strengthen Paystack’s ability to support businesses that want to launch financial products while reducing the need to rely on fragmented third-party providers.

It also highlights the changing economics of Nigerian fintech. Building infrastructure independently can be expensive, particularly as regulatory requirements, payment costs and competition increase. Joining forces with a larger platform can give smaller companies a clearer path to scale while allowing the acquiring company to bring specialised technology and talent in-house.

The Allawee deal therefore represents more than the quiet absorption of one fintech into another. It is another sign that Nigeria’s next fintech chapter may be defined less by the number of startups entering the market and more by how effectively the strongest platforms combine capabilities to build deeper financial infrastructure.

Nigerian card-issuing fintech Allawee is reportedly folding into Paystack following a quiet acquisition, marking another notable consolidation in the country’s increasingly competitive fintech sector.
