The answer was straightforward—access to quick working capital to buy stock and keep their businesses moving. That conversation eventually became 4G Capital, a lender that has now disbursed more than $1 billion across over seven million loans.

Hennessy-Barrett’s journey into financial services began in the military. He served in conflict zones across the Balkans, the Middle East and South Asia, where he saw how communities need functioning businesses, jobs and capital to rebuild sustainable livelihoods. After leaving the army, he joined a South African startup and was sent to East Africa to build an unsecured lending operation.

Rather than beginning with traditional banking assumptions, he went directly into Kenya’s informal markets. He spoke with traders, observed how they operated and discovered that many were excluded from formal finance because they lacked collateral and extensive financial records.

That insight shaped 4G Capital’s first product: a $100 working-capital loan repayable over 30 days. The company used field teams to visit potential borrowers, asking them roughly 40 questions. Their responses were fed into a credit calculator that helped determine how much each business could realistically borrow.

The model was built around behaviour rather than assets. Instead of requiring entrepreneurs to prove their creditworthiness through property or years of financial statements, 4G Capital could observe repayment behaviour and gradually increase credit limits for reliable customers.

Eighteen months after launching the operation, Hennessy-Barrett led a management buyout and began trading as 4G Capital in 2015. As the company issued more loans, it accumulated valuable data about customers, repayment patterns and business cycles.

That data eventually became Eva, the company’s proprietary underwriting algorithm. The system analyses factors such as repayment history and seasonal trading patterns to determine how much a customer can responsibly borrow. Today, the company’s underwriting process is almost entirely algorithmic.

4G Capital also discovered that access to money was only part of the challenge facing small businesses. Many merchants struggled with bookkeeping and stock management, limiting their ability to grow. The company therefore introduced enterprise training alongside lending to help entrepreneurs strengthen their businesses and improve their ability to repay.

It later expanded into supply-chain finance, allowing distributors to receive immediate payment for goods supplied to retailers while 4G Capital financed the retailers’ purchases.

The scale of the business today is striking. 4G Capital says it has disbursed more than $1 billion through over seven million loans, with a repayment rate of about 95%. Its average loan remains relatively small—around $120 to $130—while customers with strong repayment histories can access loans of up to $2,000.

Yet Hennessy-Barrett sees significant room for further growth. Kenya has an estimated 7.2 million micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, while 4G Capital has served fewer than 800,000. Across the region, small businesses still face a multibillion-dollar financing gap.

The story of 4G Capital ultimately shows that large financial businesses do not always begin with complicated technology or enormous loans. Sometimes they begin by listening closely to customers, understanding how they actually operate and designing financial products around their realities.

Thirteen years ago, former British Army officer Wayne Hennessy-Barrett arrived in Kenya with little conventional finance experience and a simple question for informal traders: what do you need?
