The global ride-hailing company announced that it will wind down its operations in the country effective September 2, 2026, bringing an end to a presence that helped shape Nigeria’s modern app-based transportation industry.

Uber entered Nigeria in 2014, launching first in Lagos. Its arrival introduced a new model of urban transportation built around smartphones, GPS, digital payments and on-demand mobility. Instead of waiting on the roadside for a taxi, passengers could request a vehicle through an app, track the driver and pay electronically. Over time, the model became increasingly familiar to Nigerians and helped accelerate competition in the country’s transportation sector.

The company said its decision followed a thorough review of its business and changing priorities. Uber has also clarified that the Nigerian exit is part of a broader reassessment of where it can generate the most value for riders and drivers across Africa. Its departure from Nigeria is therefore not being presented as a withdrawal from the continent altogether.

The timing is significant. Nigeria remains one of Africa’s largest consumer markets, with a huge urban population and persistent demand for convenient transportation. Yet operating in the market has also presented challenges. Uber drivers have previously protested over fares, commissions and working conditions, reflecting the difficult balance between keeping rides affordable for customers and ensuring drivers can earn sustainably.

Regulatory and operational pressures have also remained part of the ride-hailing environment. In July 2026, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria directed Uber and Bolt to suspend commercial operations at airports it manages pending the finalisation of licence agreements. However, Uber has specifically stated that its decision to leave Nigeria is not related to the FAAN directive.

For Nigerian riders, Uber’s exit means losing one of the most recognisable names in digital mobility. For drivers, it represents the disappearance of another platform through which they could access passengers and generate income. Competitors such as Bolt and other local mobility platforms could now have an opportunity to capture customers and drivers left behind.

More broadly, Uber’s departure raises questions about the economics of operating technology platforms in Nigeria. The country offers enormous demand, but companies must navigate regulation, inflation, vehicle costs, fuel prices, driver economics and intense competition.

Uber’s 12-year journey demonstrates both sides of Nigeria’s technology market: its ability to support large-scale digital adoption, and the difficulty of building sustainable businesses in a complex operating environment.

The company’s exit is therefore more than the closure of a ride-hailing service. It marks the end of an era for Nigeria’s mobility startup ecosystem—and creates an opening for the next generation of companies to rethink how Nigerians move.

After 12 years of changing how Nigerians move around their cities, Uber is leaving Nigeria.
