The transaction was completed on August 14, 2026, although the financial terms have not been disclosed.

The deal gives Shoprite access to a network it could not easily build through its own stores. R&A Cellular’s point-of-sale devices allow informal retailers to accept card, tap and digital-wallet payments while also selling airtime, data, electricity, gaming and other prepaid products. Its platform can also operate offline and synchronise transactions when connectivity returns, an important feature for merchants operating in areas with unreliable internet access.

For Shoprite, the bigger opportunity is financial services.

The retailer already operates a substantial financial-services business through products such as Money Market, which provides transactional accounts, payments and other services to consumers. Its financial-services products are available through thousands of stores as well as digital channels including apps, WhatsApp, USSD and the web.

R&A Cellular gives those services a new distribution channel.

Instead of requiring customers to visit a Shoprite or Checkers outlet, Shoprite can potentially bring financial products closer to consumers through the neighbourhood businesses they already use every day. The company has said it plans to expand R&A Cellular’s installed device base nationally, increase the value-added services available through the platform and embed Shoprite’s financial-services products into the ecosystem.

The strategy comes as South Africa’s informal economy attracts growing attention from major retailers and financial companies. Spaza shops remain critical to township and community commerce, but many informal businesses still have limited access to formal financial services and business financing. The South African government is also supporting formalisation through its R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund.

Shoprite is entering a competitive market. Pepkor’s Flash and Shop2Shop, MTN’s MoMo Pay, Vodacom’s VodaPay and Yoco are among the businesses targeting informal merchants and digital payments.

That competition explains why Shoprite’s move is about more than putting payment machines in small shops. It is about controlling a distribution network for payments, prepaid products and eventually broader financial services.

The opportunity is substantial. South Africa’s informal retail economy is estimated to be worth hundreds of billions of rand annually, making spaza shops an increasingly important battleground for companies seeking their next source of growth.

Shoprite’s bet is that its retail scale, combined with R&A Cellular’s technology and informal-market reach, can turn neighbourhood shops into another channel for financial inclusion—and another engine of growth for the retailer.

Shoprite is taking its fintech ambitions beyond supermarkets and into one of South Africa’s most important but underserved parts of the economy: spaza shops and informal retailers.
