As banks, fintechs, mobile-money operators and payment providers process more transactions across multiple channels, criminals are finding more ways to exploit gaps. Cape Town-based Orca Fraud is building technology specifically for this environment, using real-time intelligence to detect suspicious activity before it spreads.

Founded by Thalia Pillay and Carla Wilby, Orca Fraud is a FraudTech company focused on emerging markets. Its premise is straightforward: fraud in Africa does not always resemble fraud in more developed markets, so institutions need detection tools built around the realities of African payment systems.

The company’s platform uses artificial intelligence and transaction data to identify emerging fraud patterns and networks. Rather than treating every suspicious transaction as an isolated event, Orca looks for relationships and behavioural signals that can reveal coordinated activity. Its technology can be integrated into payment flows, allowing financial institutions to assess transactions in real time and respond to threats without unnecessarily slowing legitimate payments.

This approach matters because Africa’s financial infrastructure is highly fragmented. Consumers can move money through bank accounts, mobile wallets, cards, agents and fintech applications, creating multiple points where criminals can exploit weaknesses. Fraud can also cross platforms, making it difficult for institutions relying on traditional, siloed monitoring systems to see the complete picture.

Orca’s solution is designed to address that complexity. Its AI-driven fraud orchestration platform brings capabilities such as transaction screening, device intelligence, network analysis and automated reporting into a single integration. The company also offers a no-code approach that enables fraud teams to respond to threats without constantly depending on engineering teams.

The startup’s scale is already significant. Orca says it processes more than $5 billion in transaction volume every month across more than 70 countries, working with banks, telecommunications companies and payment providers, primarily across Africa.

That traction helped the company raise $2.35 million in an oversubscribed seed round in March 2026. The round was led by returning investor Norrsken22, with participation from OneDayYes, Enza Capital and CV VC Africa. Orca plans to use the funding to expand its real-time fraud intelligence and enterprise infrastructure across Africa and other emerging markets.

The larger opportunity is tied directly to financial inclusion. As more Africans gain access to digital financial services, the cost of fraud becomes more than a problem for banks. Fraud can undermine consumer trust, discourage digital adoption and weaken confidence in the very systems designed to make financial services more accessible.

Orca is therefore betting that fraud prevention should not be an afterthought added once payment infrastructure is built. It should be embedded into the infrastructure itself.

For Africa’s rapidly expanding digital economy, that distinction could become increasingly important: payments can only scale sustainably when trust scales with them.

Africa’s digital payments boom is creating a new problem alongside its enormous opportunity: keeping increasingly complex financial systems safe from fraud.
