According to data from TechCabal Insights, African startups raised about $1.44 billion across 146 disclosed transactions in the first six months of 2026, slightly above the $1.42 billion recorded during the same period in 2025.

However, the headline figure masks an important change in the market. Investors are increasingly putting larger amounts into fewer companies. Data from the NTU-SBF Centre for African Studies estimates that startups raised approximately $1.36 billion in the first half through deals of at least $100,000, while the number of ventures raising capital fell sharply. This suggests that investors are concentrating on companies with stronger revenues, established business models and clearer paths to profitability.

June was particularly important for the continent’s funding performance. African startups raised about $515 million during the month, with electric-mobility company Spiro accounting for a major share after raising approximately $270 million in equity. The company raised about $327 million when earlier debt transactions were included, making it one of the biggest funding recipients on the continent during the first half.

July, however, brought a sharp slowdown. African startups raised approximately $102 million during the month, with debt accounting for most of the funding. Equity investment fell to around $25.5 million, reflecting the growing caution among venture investors.

Despite the uneven monthly performance, several sectors continue to attract capital. Fintech remains one of Africa’s strongest startup categories, while mobility, artificial intelligence, healthcare, agriculture, clean energy and digital infrastructure are also receiving growing attention. This reflects investor interest in businesses addressing major African challenges, from financial inclusion and transportation to energy access and agricultural productivity.

Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt remain among the continent’s most active startup ecosystems, while countries such as Tanzania and Malawi are beginning to attract greater attention.

The funding boom is significant because startups can contribute to job creation, innovation, financial inclusion and economic diversification. But the concentration of capital also presents a challenge. Smaller and early-stage businesses may struggle to secure funding even as larger startups receive increasingly sizeable cheques.

Ultimately, Africa’s $2.10 billion startup funding milestone demonstrates that international and local investors have not abandoned the continent. Instead, the market is becoming more disciplined. Investors are demanding stronger businesses, sustainable revenues and clearer returns.

For African entrepreneurs, the message is increasingly clear: access to capital remains possible, but quality, resilience and scalability are becoming more important than ever.

African startups continued to attract significant investor interest in 2026, with funding reaching about $2.10 billion in the first eight months of the year.
