Mohamed Mohamed has been appointed administrator and has taken control of the company’s assets and affairs. The company’s directors can no longer deal with its assets without the administrator’s permission, while creditors have been given an opportunity to submit their claims.

Twiga Foods was founded in 2014 by Peter Njonjo and Grant Brooke with a goal of transforming food distribution in Kenya. Its technology-driven platform connected food producers and suppliers with informal retailers, helping small shops access products while creating a more efficient route from suppliers to consumers.

The model attracted substantial investor interest. Twiga raised more than $180 million over its lifetime, becoming one of Kenya’s best-funded startups. Investors included major international institutions and venture capital firms, reflecting strong confidence in the potential of technology to improve Africa’s fragmented food supply chains.

However, rapid expansion came with significant operating costs. Twiga’s business required investment in distribution, logistics, employees and working capital. As market conditions became more difficult, the company began reducing costs and changing its strategy.

In 2023, Twiga reportedly laid off hundreds of employees and moved away from operating its own delivery fleet. The company also faced disputes involving unpaid obligations and later secured additional financing from existing investors to help stabilise its finances. Further job cuts followed in 2024 as management continued efforts to make the business more sustainable.

Twiga subsequently attempted another major transformation. In 2025, it acquired controlling stakes in FMCG distributors Jumra, Sojpar and Raisons, seeking to shift toward a broader distribution model that could use established businesses and infrastructure rather than carrying the full cost of its original operation.

But the restructuring did not eliminate the company’s financial problems. In March 2026, Twiga Tatu SEZ Limited, an entity associated with the wider Twiga ecosystem, faced a High Court liquidation petition over alleged unpaid debts.

The administration of GT Flow now places the company’s future in the hands of an administrator. Questions remain over its assets, creditors, employees and the businesses connected to the wider Twiga ecosystem.

Twiga’s struggles offer a wider lesson for Africa’s startup sector. Raising large amounts of venture capital can support rapid growth, but businesses operating in logistics, agriculture and distribution must eventually demonstrate sustainable margins and strong cash flow.

For a company once celebrated as a symbol of African startup innovation, entering administration represents a dramatic change. Twiga’s original mission addressed a genuine problem, but its long financial struggle shows how difficult it can be to turn a promising technology-enabled business model into a sustainable enterprise.

Kenyan startup Twiga Foods has entered administration, marking a major setback for one of the country’s most prominent technology companies and highlighting the financial pressures that have increasingly challenged African startups.
