The discussion focused on how companies can contribute to developing local talent while helping entrepreneurs overcome the challenges of turning technical skills and innovative ideas into viable businesses.

Speaking during the session, inDrive Nigeria Country Manager Timothy Oladimeji said Nigeria has significant talent but needs more opportunities for trained professionals to gain practical experience and continue developing their skills.

According to Oladimeji, the responsibility for building this ecosystem should not rest with government or educational institutions alone. He called on private-sector organisations, particularly employers, to share knowledge, learning resources and practical experiences with emerging professionals.

He argued that companies should look beyond recruiting people who already possess the required skills and play a role in developing the next generation of talent. This could include opening internal learning resources, sharing lessons from previous projects and creating opportunities for young professionals to gain exposure to real-world business and technology challenges.

The call comes as Nigeria continues to develop a large technology and startup ecosystem, with professionals working across software development, fintech, artificial intelligence, mobility, digital commerce and other emerging industries. However, possessing technical skills does not automatically translate into access to capital, customers, mentorship or opportunities to build scalable businesses.

Oladimeji particularly highlighted the experience of women entrepreneurs. He said Nigeria recorded the highest number of applications from any country during the 2026 Aurora Tech Award cycle, an inDrive initiative supporting women technology entrepreneurs. He described the participation as an indication of the innovation potential among Nigerian women founders, while noting that many entrepreneurs face challenges beyond technical capability.

For founders, the gap can involve access to funding, business networks, market opportunities and support needed to move from an early-stage idea to a growing company. Strengthening these areas could help more skilled Nigerians participate in the technology economy as entrepreneurs, employees and innovators.

inDrive has also introduced talent and skills-development initiatives within its own operations. Earlier in 2026, the company launched an inDrive Academy for drivers in Nigeria, providing training around areas including vehicle condition, identity verification, safe driving, transparency and conflict resolution.

The company’s wider ecosystem includes mobility, courier services, freight, financial services and other ventures, creating opportunities for technology and operational talent across different areas.

As Nigeria’s technology sector evolves, the discussion is increasingly shifting from simply producing skilled workers to creating an environment where those skills can be applied, rewarded and converted into businesses and long-term economic opportunities. inDrive’s message at GITEX Nigeria adds to that conversation by calling for broader participation from the private sector and other stakeholders in building the support systems needed for Nigerian talent to grow.

Nigerian technology talent is attracting growing attention, but inDrive says stronger collaboration among businesses, investors, policymakers and other ecosystem players is needed to help skilled people turn their abilities into sustainable careers and scalable businesses.
