Bekia plans to use the capital to strengthen its technology, expand its engineering team and launch a new business-to-business software product called Bekia Next.

Founded by Alaa Afifi, Bekia initially focused on connecting households with waste collectors. Through its platform, users can arrange pickups for recyclable materials, which are weighed and valued before transactions are recorded and payments made. The company has since expanded its model to serve businesses and industrial customers.

The startup says it has diverted more than 25,000 tonnes of waste from landfills, onboarded more than 2,400 independent collectors and served more than 100,000 customers. Its platform has also recorded significant growth in recent years as demand increases for more organised recycling and waste-management services.

Bekia’s next phase centres on Bekia Next, a B2B platform expected to launch in October 2026. The software is designed to help companies manage recyclable waste transactions through a digital marketplace, connecting businesses with verified waste traders and recyclers.

The platform will also turn collection and recycling records into data that companies can use for sustainability reporting. One planned feature is the production of verified certificates documenting avoided carbon emissions, giving corporate customers a way to track the environmental impact of their waste-management activities.

The move comes as Egypt seeks to improve its recycling performance. The country generates around 60,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste each day, while the government has set a target of increasing the municipal recycling rate to 60% by 2027, from about 37% in 2024. Much of the existing waste trade remains informal, creating challenges around documentation, pricing, traceability and compliance.

For Bekia, digitisation offers a way to address these gaps without attempting to replace the entire existing collection network. Instead, the company is building technology that can connect households, independent collectors, businesses and industrial recycling buyers.

The new funding will also support Bekia’s plans to test its model in another African market. This could give the company an opportunity to apply its technology to other markets where recycling systems remain fragmented and large volumes of recyclable material move through informal channels.

Bekia’s fundraising reflects growing investor interest in Africa’s circular economy, where technology startups are attempting to combine environmental impact with commercially scalable business models. By creating digital records around waste transactions, the company is positioning data and traceability as an important part of the region’s evolving recycling infrastructure.

Egyptian waste-management startup Bekia has raised $765,000 in seed funding as it moves to digitise the country’s fragmented recycling industry and bring greater transparency to a market that has traditionally relied heavily on cash, informal networks and limited transaction records.
