By February 2026, the company said it had about 30,000 users across Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Senegal. Its services include an app, WhatsApp chatbot, business platform and API for payment integrations.

The problems emerged as Payd’s transaction volumes expanded rapidly. Monthly payment volume increased from about $500,000 in September 2025 to more than $3 million in April and May 2026. At its peak, the company supported 52 currencies, later reducing that number to 35 and now planning to cut it further to 13.

The rapid expansion exposed weaknesses in the company’s treasury model.

Payd received most incoming payments in US dollars but was required to make many customer payouts in local currencies. When exchange rates changed between the time funds were received and when customers requested payouts, the amount of local currency needed to settle those obligations could increase significantly.

For example, a $100 payment could initially be prefunded when the dollar was worth 10 units of a particular local currency. If the exchange rate changed to 13 units before the customer withdrew the money, Payd would need to provide substantially more local currency than it had originally set aside. Across multiple currencies and settlement periods, these differences accumulated into losses.

The company paused some payouts in May as the losses affected liquidity. Customers subsequently reported delayed or failed transfers, including difficulties with transfers to Nigeria. Payd said the temporary suspension was necessary while it reviewed its treasury operations and worked to protect customer funds.

The planned restart is therefore also a restructuring of the business model. Payd says it has overhauled its treasury system, reduced the number of supported currencies and is changing how it manages funds required for customer settlements.

The company also plans to allow users to track existing balances and select the accounts into which settlements will be paid when services resume.

The episode highlights a broader challenge for African fintechs. Cross-border payments can generate rapid transaction growth, but high volumes do not automatically translate into sustainable profits. Companies must manage exchange-rate exposure, liquidity, settlement timing and the costs charged by payment partners.

Payd’s experience shows how quickly those risks can become material when a fintech scales across multiple currencies without sufficiently precise treasury controls.

The company now plans to focus on operating from revenue while directing remaining funds towards addressing its customer shortfall over the coming months. It has not disclosed the size of that shortfall.

For Payd, the return of its app and payment channels is only the first step. The bigger test will be whether its new treasury structure can support growth without allowing currency movements to undermine the funds customers depend on.

Kenyan fintech Payd is preparing to resume its payment services after foreign-exchange losses left the company short of funds needed to settle some customer balances, exposing the risks of rapid growth in Africa’s increasingly competitive cross-border payments market.
