Degrees remain important, but a qualification alone is increasingly less likely to prove that a candidate can solve real-world problems.

Recent evidence points to a broader shift toward skills-based hiring. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 found that 81% of employers globally expect to continue using work experience when assessing candidates between 2025 and 2030, while 48% expect to use skills assessments. University degrees remain relevant, but 43% of employers expect them to remain a hiring requirement.

South Africa reflects this changing environment. More than 60% of businesses in the country identify skills gaps as a major barrier to business transformation, according to the World Economic Forum. The report also found that 34% of South African companies plan to remove degree requirements to expand their talent pools, while AI and big data, technological literacy and cybersecurity are expected to be among the skills in high demand.

For technology employers, the practical test can take many forms. A software developer may be asked to demonstrate an application they have built. A data analyst can show a portfolio of dashboards or models. A cybersecurity candidate can demonstrate experience through security projects, simulations or certifications. For AI roles, employers may want evidence that applicants can work effectively with AI tools and translate them into useful products or business processes.

The shift is partly driven by the speed at which technology changes. University curricula can take time to adapt, while programming frameworks, cloud platforms and AI tools evolve rapidly. South African employers have reported gaps in practical skills across areas including cloud computing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data and software development.

That does not mean universities are becoming irrelevant. Instead, the market is placing greater value on the combination of formal education and practical experience. Internships, work-integrated learning, open-source contributions, freelance projects and personal technology products can give graduates evidence of how they apply what they have learned.

The change could also create new opportunities for self-taught developers and people who entered technology through bootcamps or online learning. Pnet has reported that employers may prioritise proven skills and practical experience when suitable candidates with both formal qualifications and hands-on expertise are difficult to find.

For South Africa’s next generation of tech workers, the message is increasingly clear: education can open the door, but demonstrable ability can determine what happens after it opens.

The new hiring benchmark is therefore not simply about replacing degrees with projects. It is about connecting credentials to evidence — showing employers not only what candidates studied, but what they can build, solve and deliver.

In South Africa’s technology sector, the traditional question of what a candidate studied is increasingly being followed by a more practical one: what can they actually build?
