But that pathway is becoming more difficult as the Trump administration tightens the H-1B visa programme, raising the financial and regulatory barriers facing companies that want to recruit skilled workers from abroad.

The latest changes extend a $100,000 payment requirement for certain new H-1B applications involving workers outside the United States. The Trump administration introduced the measure in September 2025 and, on September 18, 2026, extended the restriction for another year, through September 2027.

For African technology professionals, the issue is not simply the size of the fee. The H-1B system has traditionally provided a route for employers to bring specialised foreign workers into the US when they could not easily fill certain positions domestically. A dramatically higher cost can make companies more cautious about sponsoring candidates who are still based in Africa.

This could particularly affect emerging technology hubs such as Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt and Ghana, where a growing pool of engineers, developers, data specialists and founders increasingly participates in the global technology economy.

The administration argues that the restrictions are designed to prevent employers from using H-1B workers to replace American employees or suppress wages. The September 2026 executive order also directs federal agencies to pay closer attention to employers that have recently laid off US workers in similar roles when assessing H-1B applications.

The effects are already visible in the programme. According to the White House, H-1B registrations from the largest IT outsourcing companies fell by 92% following the 2025 restrictions, while registrations increasingly shifted toward higher-paid and higher-skilled workers.

For African professionals, this creates a more selective US market. Candidates with highly specialised skills, strong academic credentials and employers willing to absorb significant immigration costs may continue to find opportunities. Others may face longer waits, fewer sponsorship opportunities or employers choosing to hire them remotely instead.

That could accelerate another trend: the globalisation of African tech careers without physical relocation. Companies can increasingly employ African engineers from Lagos, Nairobi, Cape Town or Accra while maintaining operations in the US and Europe.

Other countries may also become more attractive destinations for African talent. The United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and emerging technology centres in the Middle East offer alternative pathways for skilled workers seeking international careers.

The H-1B crackdown therefore does not eliminate the American opportunity for African tech talent. Instead, it raises the threshold for accessing it. As immigration costs and scrutiny increase, African professionals and technology companies may increasingly have to build careers and businesses that are global from the start—without assuming that Silicon Valley must be their final destination.

For years, the United States has been one of the most attractive destinations for African technology professionals seeking opportunities in software engineering, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science and other specialised fields.
