While AI could contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, emerging markets (excluding China) are projected to capture only $1.7 trillion, underlining both a challenge and an opportunity. Africa must leverage AI to overcome traditional barriers and promote inclusive development through localized innovation and digital sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is already making a difference: in Zambia, it&#8217;s helping reduce maternal mortality; in Ghana, it supports efforts against antimicrobial resistance; and in East Africa, it boosts crop yields for smallholder farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Tanzania, Vodacom is leading the way by using AI to drive inclusive growth. Its M-Pesa mobile money platform, handling over $135 billion in transactions annually, uses AI to provide financial services to the unbanked, expanding access to credit and fueling entrepreneurship. M-Pesa\u2019s modernization with cloud-based systems ensures continued reliability and scalability, reinforcing its role in Tanzania\u2019s growing digital economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf3e 1. <strong>AI Is Improving Lives in Rural and Urban Areas<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Agriculture<\/strong>: AI is helping smallholder farmers detect diseases early, increasing crop yields and reducing losses\u2014leading to better incomes and food security in rural areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Utilities (Power &amp; Water)<\/strong>: Vodacom\u2019s <strong>AI-enabled Internet of Things (IoT)<\/strong> solutions use smart meters and data analytics to monitor and optimize energy and water usage. This reduces waste, lowers costs, and supports sustainable urban growth, especially important as Tanzania\u2019s cities expand rapidly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udce1 2. <strong>Investments in Digital Infrastructure Are Critical<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In <strong>2024 alone<\/strong>, Vodacom invested over <strong>TZS 156 billion<\/strong> (~USD 60 million) in expanding its <strong>4G and 3G network coverage<\/strong>, especially in remote areas like <strong>Zanzibar<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhanced <strong>connectivity<\/strong> is vital for real-time AI applications such as smart farming, e-health, and mobile banking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vodacom also upgraded <strong>internet infrastructure<\/strong>, improving bandwidth via national and submarine cables and expanding <strong>fiber optic networks<\/strong> in urban centers. This makes internet access <strong>faster and more reliable<\/strong>, which is foundational for any AI-driven ecosystem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd10 3. <strong>Data Sovereignty and Local Control<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Data sovereignty<\/strong> means that Tanzanian data stays within Tanzania. Vodacom has built a <strong>locally hosted IoT platform<\/strong>, ensuring user privacy and data security.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This reduces dependency on foreign tech providers and ensures that AI systems reflect <strong>local values, cultures, and regulatory environments<\/strong>\u2014a principle crucial to achieving <strong>\u201cdigital sovereignty.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc69\ud83c\udffd\u200d\ud83d\udcbb 4. <strong>Africa\u2019s Youth: The Continent\u2019s Greatest AI Asset<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With <strong>60% of Africans under age 25<\/strong>, the continent has a massive opportunity to harness the creativity, adaptability, and ambition of its young population.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many young Africans are <strong>building AI tools tailored to local challenges<\/strong>\u2014for example, in agriculture, healthcare, education, and fintech.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Tanzania, a <strong>PwC report<\/strong> shows that <strong>over half (52%) of CEOs<\/strong> expect <strong>generative AI<\/strong> to boost profits in the near term, underscoring the private sector\u2019s belief in AI\u2019s value.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udd1d 5. <strong>Regional &amp; Global Collaboration Is Key<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rwanda\u2019s AI Scaling Hub<\/strong> and the <strong>Smart Africa Alliance<\/strong> (covering 40 countries) illustrate <strong>pan-African efforts<\/strong> to use AI in healthcare, education, and agriculture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NGOs and governments are starting to <strong>use generative AI<\/strong> to retain institutional knowledge and inform better policymaking, reducing their reliance on <strong>external (often Western) tech providers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vodafone\u2019s partnerships<\/strong> with <strong>Google and Microsoft<\/strong> show a <strong>hybrid model<\/strong>: blending <strong>access to global tech infrastructure<\/strong> with <strong>local control<\/strong> and governance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udfd9\ufe0f 6. <strong>Smart Cities &amp; Urban Growth<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By <strong>2050<\/strong>, <strong>68% of the world\u2019s population<\/strong> will live in cities. Africa\u2019s rapid urbanization means it must plan now for <strong>data-driven urban infrastructure<\/strong>\u2014traffic management, utilities, security, and service delivery\u2014all of which benefit from AI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcf1 7. <strong>Infrastructure Gaps Are Still a Major Barrier<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only <strong>28% of Africans have access to smartphones<\/strong>, limiting their ability to use more advanced AI services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many still use <strong>USSD technology<\/strong> (text-based systems), which restricts the <strong>interface and capability<\/strong> of AI-powered apps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bridging Africa\u2019s <strong>$109 billion broadband gap<\/strong> is critical. This requires <strong>equitable investment and partnerships<\/strong>, like <strong>Vodafone\u2019s annual \u20ac1 billion commitment<\/strong> to improving networks across Africa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2696\ufe0f 8. <strong>Ethics, Equity, and Inclusion Must Guide AI Development<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Africa must <strong>not remain a passive consumer<\/strong> of AI technologies developed elsewhere. It must become a <strong>co-creator<\/strong>, ensuring AI reflects <strong>local languages, cultures, norms, and priorities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This means:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Building <strong>local AI talent and institutions<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establishing <strong>regulatory frameworks<\/strong> for ethical AI use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensuring <strong>AI benefits are widely shared<\/strong>, not just concentrated in elite hands or foreign companies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udccc Summary: What\u2019s at Stake?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI holds the potential to <strong>transform the Global South<\/strong>, but the path forward must be <strong>inclusive, ethical, and locally driven<\/strong>.
