The pilot marks another step in Nigeria’s shift toward digital and contactless payments.

Under the new arrangement, eligible Wema Bank customers can tokenize their Verve cards through the bank’s mobile banking application and activate them for Mobile Tap-to-Pay. Once enabled, customers can use their compatible devices at supported contactless payment terminals by simply tapping their phones rather than presenting a physical card.

The technology behind the service is tokenization. Instead of exposing the actual card details during a digital transaction, tokenization replaces sensitive card information with a secure digital token. This allows payment information to be used without directly revealing the underlying card details, adding another layer of protection to digital transactions.

For consumers, the biggest change is convenience. Physical cards can be misplaced, damaged or forgotten, while mobile phones are increasingly carried throughout the day. By bringing the card into a mobile device, Verve and Wema Bank are reducing the number of steps required to complete a contactless transaction.

The launch also fits into Wema Bank’s wider focus on digital banking and payment services. The bank operates digital channels including its mobile banking services and ALAT platform, while also providing merchants with POS payment infrastructure.

For Verve, the partnership provides an opportunity to expand how its cards can be used in an increasingly mobile-first payments market. Rather than limiting card payments to physical plastic, the company is extending its network into digital wallets and mobile devices.

The move comes as contactless payments gain greater attention across Nigeria. Tap-to-pay allows customers to complete transactions by bringing a compatible device close to an enabled terminal, reducing the need to insert or swipe a physical card. Nigeria’s payment ecosystem has increasingly incorporated contactless technology as financial institutions and payment companies explore faster digital transaction experiences.

Importantly, the current rollout is a pilot involving eligible Wema Bank customers rather than a universal launch for every Verve cardholder. Customers also need a compatible device and access to supported contactless terminals.

Verve says its tokenization capabilities can be extended to other financial institutions across Nigeria. That could eventually allow more banks to provide similar mobile payment functionality to their Verve customers.

The broader significance of the partnership is that it moves card payments further away from dependence on physical cards. As smartphones become increasingly central to banking, shopping and financial management, the ability to turn a traditional bank card into a secure digital payment credential could become an increasingly important part of Nigeria’s payments infrastructure.

For Verve and Wema Bank, the rollout represents a convergence of card networks, mobile banking and contactless technology. For customers, it offers another way to pay—one where the phone in their hand can also serve as their payment card.

Verve has launched a new mobile tap-to-pay service in partnership with Wema Bank, giving eligible Verve cardholders a way to make contactless payments using compatible mobile devices instead of carrying their physical cards.
