But behind the growth in retail participation lies a less visible challenge: the financial infrastructure needed to support millions of small investors is still developing.

The shift is being driven by smartphones, digital payments and fintech platforms that have lowered the barriers to entering financial markets. In markets such as Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, investors can increasingly open accounts remotely, fund them electronically and access domestic or international assets without relying entirely on traditional brokerage firms.

That convenience is helping bring a new generation of investors into markets that were once largely dominated by institutions and high-net-worth individuals.

However, getting more people into investing is only one part of the equation. Supporting that participation at scale requires reliable market infrastructure covering identity verification, payments, custody, settlement, data, compliance and investor protection.

For fintech companies, connecting customers to investment products can therefore be easier than building the systems required to handle growing transaction volumes safely and efficiently.

Payments remain an important piece of the puzzle. Investment platforms need dependable ways for customers to deposit and withdraw funds, while cross-border investing introduces additional challenges involving foreign exchange, international transfers and regulatory requirements.

Then there is custody and settlement. When an investor buys an asset, the transaction ultimately depends on systems that record ownership, settle trades and safeguard assets. If these processes remain fragmented across markets, platforms may face higher operating costs and longer settlement cycles.

Regulation also becomes more complex as retail investing expands. Platforms must comply with know-your-customer requirements, anti-money-laundering rules, licensing obligations and increasingly sophisticated expectations around consumer protection. A platform serving thousands of customers can manage these requirements differently from one serving millions.

Market data is another infrastructure layer. Investors need timely and accurate information about prices, company disclosures and market movements. Providing that information across multiple African exchanges and asset classes can be technically and commercially challenging.

The infrastructure gap is particularly important because retail investing is increasingly becoming a technology business as much as a financial-services business. The user interface may be a mobile app, but behind it sits a network of brokers, exchanges, custodians, banks, payment providers, regulators and data systems.

That creates opportunities for financial infrastructure companies. Instead of competing solely for retail customers, some businesses can build the rails that allow investment platforms, banks and fintechs to offer products more efficiently.

Africa’s retail-investing opportunity, therefore, is not simply about convincing more people to invest. It is about creating the infrastructure that can make widespread participation reliable, affordable and sustainable.

As more Africans move from saving cash to owning financial assets, the next stage of the market may depend less on how attractive the investment app looks and more on whether the systems underneath it can handle the scale.

Africa’s retail-investing market is expanding as more individuals gain access to digital platforms that allow them to buy stocks, bonds, mutual funds and other financial assets from their phones.
