They are increasingly linked to fraud, impersonation and attempts to obtain sensitive personal or financial information. For consumers, the challenge is that a call can appear to come from a familiar number or local area code, making it difficult to distinguish a legitimate caller from a scammer.

That is where caller identification technology is becoming increasingly important.

Modern anti-spam systems can analyse calling patterns, flag numbers associated with suspicious behaviour and warn users before they answer. Some systems can also automatically block calls that meet certain risk criteria.

The technology is particularly valuable in markets where mobile phones are the primary way millions of people communicate and access financial services.

The rise of mobile money, digital banking and fintech has also increased the potential payoff for scammers. A successful social-engineering call can persuade victims to reveal one-time passwords, PINs or other sensitive information, potentially giving criminals access to bank accounts or digital wallets.

As a result, identifying suspicious calls has become part of the broader fight against digital fraud.

Telecommunications operators are also under pressure to do more. Regulators increasingly expect networks to monitor abnormal traffic, address fraudulent SIM activity and cooperate with authorities when numbers are linked to criminal activity.

However, stopping spam calls is not as simple as blocking individual numbers.

Scammers can frequently change phone numbers, use automated calling systems or manipulate caller identification information. Blocking one number may therefore have limited impact if the same operation can quickly move to another.

This is pushing the industry toward more sophisticated, network-level approaches that look at behaviour rather than relying only on the identity of a particular number.

Artificial intelligence could further strengthen these systems. Algorithms can examine large volumes of call data and identify patterns that may be difficult for humans to detect. A sudden surge in calls from a number, repeated short calls to thousands of users or unusual calling activity could all contribute to a risk assessment.

But stronger detection also creates a privacy challenge.

Telecommunications companies must balance fraud prevention with the protection of legitimate users’ communications and personal data. Systems that monitor calling behaviour need clear safeguards to prevent legitimate numbers from being incorrectly flagged or sensitive information from being misused.

Consumers still have an important role to play. People should avoid sharing passwords, PINs or verification codes over the phone and should be cautious when callers create a sense of urgency. Legitimate banks and service providers generally have established channels for verifying customer requests.

The fight against spam calls is therefore becoming a technology and policy battle rather than simply a customer-service issue.

For scammers, the “jig” may indeed be up—but eliminating fraudulent calls entirely will require cooperation between telecom operators, regulators, technology companies, financial institutions and consumers.

As detection systems become smarter, the goal is not merely to block annoying calls. It is to make mobile networks significantly harder to exploit for fraud while ensuring that legitimate communication remains fast, accessible and secure.

The era of anonymous and persistent spam calls is coming under increasing pressure as telecommunications companies, regulators and technology providers deploy new tools to identify suspicious callers and protect consumers from unwanted communications.
