Across the country, informal miners extract gold, lithium, tin, tantalite and other valuable minerals from sites that can operate far from official records. Now, artificial intelligence is emerging as a tool to help bring some of this hidden activity into view.

The challenge is not necessarily a lack of mineral resources. Nigeria has extensive deposits spread across several states, but limited geological data, informal operations and fragmented records have made it difficult for regulators and investors to understand exactly where mining is taking place and who controls the resources.

AI-powered mapping and data platforms are beginning to change that equation. By combining satellite imagery, geological information, field reports and other datasets, these systems can identify patterns that may indicate mining activity. Areas that previously appeared to be ordinary stretches of land can be analysed for signs of excavation, changing vegetation, road development and other indicators associated with mining.

The technology could prove particularly useful in identifying unregistered or poorly documented mining sites. Instead of relying entirely on physical inspections, authorities could use AI to prioritise locations for investigation and compare activity over time.

That has implications beyond enforcement. Better visibility could help Nigeria understand the true size of its mining economy and identify opportunities for legitimate operators and investors. Accurate data can make mineral deposits easier to evaluate, potentially improving access to financing and encouraging more formal investment in the sector.

The technology also raises an important question: who actually benefits when hidden mineral wealth becomes visible?

For communities living around mining areas, greater transparency could create opportunities for improved regulation, environmental protection and local economic participation. But if data about mineral deposits becomes concentrated in the hands of governments, large companies or technology providers, communities and smaller operators could risk being pushed further to the margins.

There is also the environmental dimension. AI-based monitoring could help identify land degradation and detect mining activity in sensitive areas. This could give regulators a faster way to respond to illegal operations and monitor whether licensed miners are complying with environmental requirements.

Nigeria’s mining future, therefore, may increasingly depend on its ability to turn geological information into actionable intelligence. The country does not simply need to know what is beneath the ground; it needs to understand what is happening above it.

As AI makes previously invisible mining activity easier to detect, Nigeria has an opportunity to build a more transparent mineral economy. But technology alone will not solve the sector’s problems. The real test will be whether better information leads to stronger regulation, fairer participation and more value staying within the communities and country where the minerals are found.

Nigeria’s mining sector is sitting on billions of dollars in mineral wealth, yet a large part of the industry remains difficult to see, track and regulate.
