Heirs Energies is betting that technology can help change that equation.

The Nigerian energy company, founded by Tony Elumelu, has made a major investment in its upstream operations, including the acquisition and development of assets that have historically faced significant production challenges. Its strategy increasingly combines capital investment with digital tools designed to improve how oil fields are monitored, managed and operated.

The $1.1 billion figure attached to Heirs Energies’ operational push reflects the scale of that ambition. Rather than treating technology as a separate layer added to oil production, the company is attempting to integrate digital systems into the daily running of its assets.

That matters because oil production is ultimately an operational business. Knowing where equipment is located, how wells are performing, when maintenance is required and where production losses are occurring can determine whether an asset generates value or becomes a costly problem.

Digital monitoring can provide operators with more timely information from wells and facilities. Data can help identify unusual equipment behaviour, track production performance and support faster decisions. Artificial intelligence and analytics can also help companies identify patterns that may be difficult to detect manually.

For onshore operations, the potential benefits are particularly important. Infrastructure can stretch across large and difficult-to-monitor areas, while disruptions can arise from technical failures, security incidents and environmental conditions. The ability to monitor assets remotely can reduce the time between detecting a problem and responding to it.

But technology cannot eliminate the structural challenges facing Nigeria’s oil industry. Software cannot repair damaged pipelines on its own, prevent every security incident or replace the engineers and technicians responsible for maintaining physical infrastructure.

The bigger opportunity is therefore the combination of technology and operational discipline. Digital systems can provide information, but companies still need people, processes and capital to act on that information.

Heirs Energies’ approach also reflects a wider shift in African energy. As producers face pressure to increase efficiency while managing ageing assets and preparing for a changing energy market, technology is becoming increasingly important to the economics of oil production.

The experiment is ultimately less about whether code can save onshore oil and more about whether data-driven operations can make difficult assets more productive and predictable.

If Heirs Energies succeeds, the implications could extend beyond its own fields. Nigeria has significant mature oil infrastructure that requires better management and renewed investment. Demonstrating that digital tools can improve production, reduce downtime and strengthen operational visibility could offer a model for other producers.

The real test, however, will be measured in barrels produced, costs reduced and disruptions avoided. For an industry built on physical infrastructure, Heirs Energies is betting that one of its most important competitive advantages may increasingly be invisible: the software, data and digital intelligence running behind the wells.

Nigeria’s onshore oil industry has spent years battling problems that cannot be solved simply by drilling more wells.
