Banque du Caire is Egypt’s sixth-largest commercial bank by assets, making the planned listing an important development for the country’s financial markets.

At the reported valuation of approximately 80 billion Egyptian pounds, equivalent to about $1.5 billion, selling 45% of the bank could generate proceeds worth roughly $670 million to $674 million. By comparison, a 30% offering would be valued at approximately $447 million to $454 million.

However, the transaction involves existing shares held by Banque Misr rather than newly issued shares. This means the proceeds would go to the selling shareholder, not directly to Banque du Caire. The distinction is important because the offering primarily represents a change in ownership rather than a direct capital injection into the bank.

The proposed listing also highlights Egypt’s renewed efforts to attract private investment and expand participation in its capital markets. The country has pursued privatisation initiatives for years, although several planned transactions have faced delays because of economic uncertainty and changing market conditions.

Banque du Caire’s listing has a particularly long history. Egypt first announced plans to sell a minority stake in the bank in 2016, and its shares were provisionally listed on the Egyptian Exchange in 2017. An earlier attempt to proceed with the sale in 2020 was shelved following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The renewed interest could provide a significant opportunity to revive the transaction. A larger public offering would also increase the number of shares available for trading, potentially improving market liquidity and attracting a broader range of investors.

The development comes as Egypt’s financial technology sector also attracts attention. MNT-Halan, one of the country’s leading fintech companies, is preparing for its own stock market debut, highlighting the range of investment opportunities emerging in the Egyptian financial services industry.

Nevertheless, strong preliminary demand does not guarantee a successful listing. Final pricing, market conditions and investor appetite will determine the outcome.

For Egypt, a successful Banque du Caire IPO could strengthen confidence in its privatisation programme and demonstrate that state-owned financial institutions can attract substantial private investment. It would also provide an important test of whether investor interest can translate into completed transactions and deeper capital markets.

Egypt is considering a larger initial public offering (IPO) of Banque du Caire, with its state-owned parent, Banque Misr, potentially increasing the stake available to investors from 30% to 45%.
